Our Tutors

Billie Bolton

Tutor & Board Member

Billie lives in Dixon and has been tutoring since 2001. Billie is a founding member of EVTA, which began in 2004, and was the director of EVTA from 2004-2016. She now serves on the board as president. In 2009 she focused the organization on training tutors to support students with learning disabilities and continues to provide language therapy for students using the Sounds in Syllables program. Billie has literacy training from the Wilson Reading Program and two years of training in Sounds In Syllables at the Multi-Sensory Language Training Institute of New Mexico. She received her math training from children's math expert, Robert Templeton. In addition, Billie holds a B.A. in Spanish and French as well as a teaching certificate from Texas State University. She also holds a master's degree in international business.  

Karen Bozik

Mentor - Tutor

Karen Bozik has lived in Velarde for over seven years, after transplanting from Denver. She received a BFA from Metropolitan State University, Denver, and has undergone Wilson Literacy training. Her love of working with children in an academic setting first became apparent when volunteering at her daughter’s elementary school–an integrated arts school. Soon after, she worked for Denver Public Schools as a paraprofessional and substitute teacher, as well as developing after-school arts workshops. After moving to Velarde, she began working for the Espanola School District as an EA and substitute teacher and continued to do so until November, 2024. She also implemented the HITS Structured Literacy Program, through the NMPED, at Velarde Elementary, during spring semester, 2025.  Karen has worked for EVTA since 2021.

Mentor - Afterschool Tutor

Marta is a lifelong educator who operated the YES (Your Educational School) Private School in Canoncito for many years and set up her own schools in refugee camps before that. She has volunteered and worked for Embudo Valley Tutoring Association for at least a decade, is a former board member, and continuously provides advice and educational insight to the director and fellow tutors alike.

Mara Christine

After School Tutor

 Billie Bolton holds a B.A. in Spanish and French with a teaching certificate from Texas State University. She received her certificate in 1976. She also holds a Masters Degree in International Business which she received in 1981. Billie was a language arts/math tutor at Dixon Elementary in 2001. She received her math training  from children's math expert Robert Templeton. She also had support from teachers at Dixon Elementary. In addition, Billie had training from the Wilson Reading Program in 2005 and 2 years of training in Sounds In Syllables at the Multi-Sensory Language Training Institute of New Mexico in 2012. Billie is a founding member of EVTA which began in 2004. She was the director of EVTA from 2004-2016 and now serves on the board as president.

ANNE-MARIE EMANUELLI

Mentor - Tutor - Certified Teacher

Anne-Marie joined EVTA in 2020 when she retired from the classroom with over 25 years of teaching experience and a NM Level III License.  Her teaching career has included college, high school and middle school ELA, French, Art, Graphic Design, and Computer Applications. She also assists the EVTA director with administrative and programming tasks as well as helping EVTA tutors with tech support. She holds a BFA from the University of Denver and an MS from Pratt Institute, and earned her education certification from the Santa Fe Community College. She lives in Arroyo Hondo with her husband and daughter and enjoys swimming, biking, hiking and paddle boarding. Anne-Marie has been a resident of Taos County for 50+ years.

Ida marie Martinez

Mentor - Tutor - Language Specialist

Ida  graduated from the University of Wyoming with a B.A. in Education. After receiving her degree, she moved to Albuquerque, NM, became a certified K-8 classroom teacher with a TESOL Endorsement, and taught grades 1-4 in Albuquerque Public Schools for 20 years.  Ida tutored students attending APS, worked with 1st Choice Enrichment Program, and later worked as certified APS substitute teacher.  Her educational experiences broadened as a substitute teacher when she worked with students in grades PreK - 5 (English/Bilingual/DualLanguage),  Special Education, Gifted, Resource, Visual/Hearing Impaired Programs, ISP, Librarian, Computer Lab Instructor, Music, and Art.  Ida currently lives in Llano Largo, NM and enjoys a spectacular view of La Jicarita from her property. 

Arwen Scarlata

Semi-Retired Certified Teacher

Ida Marie graduated from the University of Wyoming with a B.A. in Education. nicole Thibodeau

Mentor - Tutor

Nicole grew up in Taos and Pilar. She holds an MA in English and MFA from Fort Hays State University. She is an artist and has worked in public libraries, in adult education, and been an instructor of composition. Nicole is trained in the Wilson Reading System which supports children with language learning challenges. She sees improving literacy in her hometown as necessary and meaningful. 

Alice Zorthian

Mentor - Tutor

Alice has a B.A. in Theatre and an M.S. in Elementary Education and has undergone the Wilson Literacy training. She has taught in the Taos Schools for close to 30 years in several different capacities. Most recently she taught for 8 years in the Special Ed. Department at Anansi Charter School. She is a yoga instructor as well and currently teaches yoga at the library and Yoga in the Park in the summertime. She keeps up her theater skills by performing improv and sketch comedy. She enjoys gardening, hiking, and experimental sculpture. She is a mother to one daughter, two dogs, and two cats.

Eva Behrens - Director

Eva Behrens is the EVTA director and teaches at Anansi Charter School in Taos, New Mexico. She holds a master's in education from Western New Mexico University and a post-master's educational leadership certificate from Grand Canyon University of Phoenix, Arizona.

Alva Morrison

Alva Morrison works as a home energy auditor for  ICF, an international consulting firm subcontracted to PNM and New Mexico Gas to focus on energy efficiency programs. He spent 2020 in India but remained active on the board through Zoom. Alva is connected to EVTA through his longtime association with the Dixon community.


Alexis Laube-Manigault

Alexis Laube-Manigault holds a master's in  educational leadership  from the University of New Mexico where she also completed her B.A. in American studies. She works at UNM-Taos in the TRiO Student Support Services. Before becoming an EVTA board member, Alexis was involved with the afterschool program and helped the organization maintain its website.
